Description

10% LMD (Dextran) in 5% Dextrose Injection Solution is a colloidal plasma volume expander used for the treatment and prevention of hypovolemia due to blood loss, burns, or surgical procedures. It contains dextran 40, a low molecular weight dextran (LMD), at a 10% concentration in an isotonic 5% dextrose solution, which helps restore intravascular volume and maintain hemodynamic stability.

The mechanism of action involves dextran molecules exerting an osmotic pull, increasing plasma volume and improving circulation. Dextran also reduces blood viscosity and enhances microcirculatory flow, preventing red blood cell aggregation and improving tissue perfusion. The 5% dextrose component provides a source of energy while maintaining fluid balance.

It is indicated for the management of hypovolemia, shock, and plasma volume deficits. It is contraindicated in patients with severe heart failure, renal insufficiency, or hypersensitivity to dextran. Caution is required in patients with coagulation disorders, as dextran may interfere with platelet function and increase bleeding risk.
