Description
Metoclopramide 10 mg/2 mL single-dose vial (SDV) is an injectable medication used primarily for the management of gastrointestinal motility disorders and nausea. It is a dopamine receptor antagonist that stimulates gastric emptying and enhances intestinal peristalsis, making it particularly effective in conditions such as gastroparesis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and postoperative or chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
The active ingredient, metoclopramide hydrochloride, works by blocking dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the central nervous system and enhancing acetylcholine release in the gastrointestinal tract. This dual mechanism increases the tone and amplitude of gastric contractions, facilitating the movement of stomach contents into the small intestine.
Common side effects include drowsiness, fatigue, and restlessness, while rare but serious reactions such as tardive dyskinesia and extrapyramidal symptoms may occur with prolonged use. This medication is contraindicated in patients with gastrointestinal obstruction, pheochromocytoma, or a history of tardive dyskinesia.
