Due to its slight solubility in water, it is formulated with soybean oil, glycerol, and egg lecithin to ensure stability and bioavailability. Each milliliter contains 10 mg of propofol, which acts as a short-acting hypnotic agent inducing sedation and anesthesia.

The formulation includes benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which serves to maintain sterility and stability. The presence of benzyl alcohol necessitates caution when used in neonates and patients with hypersensitivity to this compound. Propofol's pharmacokinetics allow for rapid onset of action within 30 seconds and a short duration due to fast metabolic clearance.
